North and East Yorkshire Whilst principally rural in character, North and East Yorkshire have major settlements at York, Hull, Harrogate and Scarborough. The area is very diverse including the limestone and millstone grit uplands of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors; the flat terrain of the Vales of York, Pickering and the Plain of Holderness; the chalk of the Yorkshire Wolds; a varied coastline - high, rocky cliffs in the north and low, soft eroding cliffs in Holderness and part of the Humber Estuary.
