Northumbria is now part of Natural England's North East region, which comprises Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Durham and Cleveland. For all information about Natural England's regional offices in the North East, including contact details, news, press releases and events, visit the Natural England website. Northumbria From breathtaking and beautiful expanses of heather moorland to miles upon miles of winding rivers, urban parks and stunning coastline, Northumbria comprises a diverse range of dramatic landscapes supporting a wealth of wildlife and geological features. On the coast, sand dunes studded with bloody geranium lead to abundant mud and sand flats providing havens for thousands of birds. Out to sea there are underwater reefs teeming with colourful marine life and off-shore islands supporting one of the largest breeding populations of grey seals in the UK. In the uplands, over 80% of the English black grouse population and the largest area of juniper wood in England can be found, together with lonely expanses of internationally important bog and heather moor. Its here where most of our last red squirrels live, otters breed and pine martens foray from over the border. A vast array of ancient irreplaceable habitats lie in between from butterfly havens and bluebell woods right in the heart of our towns, cities and villages to mountain hay meadows nestled at high altitude on the backbone of England. And all this is set in the context of a living and working environment which provides homes for more than 2.6 million people and a wide range of livelihoods from farming to industry. Whether you travel to the far flung reaches of Northumbria, or visit the urban areas, the work of Natural England is never far away. We are involved in a wide range of work from safeguarding special sites and rare species to organising fun-filled family events for raising awareness about wildlife and conservation. Northumbrias outstanding natural heritage strengthens and diversifies the Regions economy and benefits our living and working environment. As the Government Agency championing nature conservation, Natural England is committed to working with those who live, work and seek recreation in the north east to give the Region a truly sustainable future. Nature conservation is about safeguarding the rich variety of plants and animals, and the habitats in which they live. This rich variety is known as biodiversity. Biodiversity enhances the quality of our life and provides an inspiring and stimulating environment in which to live. As a direct result, it can also attract inward investment.
