The East Midlands area is now part of Natural England's East Midlands Region, which comprises Leicester City, Nottingham City, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire & Rutland.

East Midlands The East Midlands has a little bit of every lowland habitat from flower-rich grassland to saltmarsh with plants and animals as varied as bee orchids, barn owls and green tiger beetles. But often this is the last remaining little bit. Much of the regions natural habitats, such as marshes and woodland, are fragmented and isolated. In this predominantly arable landscape managing these small sites can be difficult: for example continuing traditional sheep or cattle grazing of grasslands and heathlands. Work in the East Midlands is aimed at supporting SSSI owners in managing their special wildlife sites, encouraging other organisations to protect natural habitats through their policies and practices, and promoting the creation of new wildlife habitat when opportunities arise.
