Wiltshire

The chalk landscape of Salisbury Plain dominates the centre of the county, as does the military occupation. Agriculture is the primary land use of the county, with fishery, forestry and transport interests close behind. Wiltshire has 136 SSSIs, 10 cSACs, 2 SPAs and 8 NNRs, so Natural England staff work very closely with 940 individual SSSI landowners, and partner organisations, including the MOD, Wiltshire County Council and other Local Authorities, the Environment Agency and RSPB.

Natural highlights of international importance include North Meadow NNR, a traditional hay meadow, which has the largest population of snakes head fritillary in the UK; the chalk streams and rivers of the Avon system; and Parsonage Down NNR, situated on the Salisbury Plain plateau, which hosts Natural England's only wholly owned farm. Less known but of equal interest are the ancient forests of Savernake, Cranborne Chase and Braydon Forest.
