These two counties contain 159 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs); 6 National Nature Reserves (NNRs); 11 Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and 7 Special Protection Areas (SPAs) a number of which are also Ramsar sites. The area includes the Lancashire Plain and Valleys, the Forest of Bowland, Liverpool Bay, Urban Mersey Basin and the Meres and Mosses Natural Areas. Though the North West is highly developed and industrialised, it contains a huge variety of biodiversity interest. With over 6 million people on our doorstep, urban and local community issues are paramount. Natural England believes strongly in working in partnership with organisations and individuals ranging from local authorities to landowners to gain maximum benefits for wildlife.
