Cumbria

From the high fells of the Lake District to the vast expanse of the North Pennines, Cumbria boasts important habitats such as heather moor and blanket bog. The freshwater lakes are a well known feature of the county and with the tarns and rivers are amongst the most ecologically important in Europe.

The long coastline with its estuarine mudflats supports wintering birds, plus saltmarsh, sand dune and shingle features. Other important habitats include limestone pavement, woodlands, raised bogs, mires meadows and pastures, indeed the very rock forms and geomorphology are particularly valued. Some of the well-known species to be found in the county include the red squirrel, natterjack toad and Arctic charr.
