Protected Sites

In England, there are approximately 1215 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) with a notified geological interest. The geological SSSI series represents the best of our geology, reflecting the diversity of England's geological history. The sites have been chosen for their past, current and future contributions to the science of geology. They include extensive coastal sites and vast upland areas, man-made sites, such as quarries and cuttings, and landforms that are still evolving today.
